Too much has been made about environmental benefits. In reality, there were not going to be many major ones. The Qld gov would have still been involved in managing the site. The amount of tailings the project were even going near were a pee in the ocean compared to what is there. The main pit has only overflowed once. The river is not toxic. It is simply acidic and probably a bit high in copper. Much of the acid leaching comes from the pyrites in the mullock mountains the project wasn't going to touch. Only minor road works were planned and these have not been started. The slag trials were simply to see if the slag could be reused as a way of disposing of it. Water has not been purified there. Spray evaporators operate and some liming to increase the pH of the discharged water. Mount Morgan is in CQ and not NQ so I can't see how NQ journalism is relevant. In my opinion, the reports were misleading but maybe not deliberately. I suspect the directors new something a while back and held on till the last moment before releasing the bad news. And so are the days of our lives.
