i read a great article in FRW w-end edition (i think) last week by a leading economist that suggested a slow down or mild/short recession in the US could be just the ticket to mildly cool the global economy (gdp growth)by putting the brakes on the bric economies, not severely mind you. as you point out Australia and some others are somewhat insulated now to what happens in the US.
may also have the benefit of arresting interest rates here while the RBA sees how it plays out.

Aussie market has raced ahead of US/DOW and in my opinion has been oversold or very close to it.
I'm not so convinced about the rise of the EU, i know the UK is of the boil and property prices are showing weakness.

guess we will all find out over the next few months, eh
