Froggy, Director is quite right - we have a massive amount of money wasted in and by government, we also have a social security net that rewards people staying home and does not place enough enthesis on actively seeking work, in many cases where there is a large family they are financially taking a hit to work. Add to that we have a health system that is unsustainable, people are paid too much for their expertise and it has to be remodeled.
The basic notion that the more you earn the more you pay in tax is fair and proper, what is not is to say the more you earn the higher the rate - bit like paying $4.50 for a certain drink, then order 5,000 of them and get charged $6.50 each. Its all counter productive and does not take into account how many hours you work to earn that money - or how much money you have to invest in a business for example to get that income level.
Yep, our system is set up so that the harder you try to give back to your family, community and OZ the bigger target you are. The reason is pretty simple though - sit on your arse and do nothing or take a chance, invest $800,000 in a business using your assets as collateral and take all the stress and strain that brings, work 60 to 80 hours a week and employ 5 people and pay their tax to the government and try and get ahead - BUT - you are only one vote - yep your vote is worth the same as the person who has consciously made the decision not to work and has been a net user of Government funds (your taxes) for the past 20 years and intends to stay using them till death do them apart.
One tax rate for all - perhaps even do away with deductions and then let our spending which creates jobs dictate the majority of the tax we pay.
