Federal election 2016: Coalition would have been smashed if Abbott was still PM

TONY Abbott’s survival as Prime Minister would have killed the government at the election according to voters across Australia.

An exclusive Galaxy poll commissioned by The Sunday Telegraph has vindicated the Prime Minister’s decision to knife his predecessor.

It finds Labor leader Bill Shorten would have been elected as Prime Minister with a majority of 29 seats if Tony Abbott were still the leader.

Conservative wake-up call: Election result would have been worse under Tony Abbott
    Renee Viellaris, The Courier-Mail

THE Conservatives in the Turnbull Government need a wake-up call - not to mention a pill for their short-term memory loss.

As they puff their chests, share their wisdom about why they nearly lost the election and demand rewards for having such insight, they forget one salient point: they would have been slaughtered under Tony Abbott’s leadership.
Let me reinforce that point. If Tony Abbott was still the PM when the election was called, Bill Shorten would be Australia’s new leader.

A poll published in The Daily Telegraph on June 26 reinforced that point. Asking how they would vote if the contest was between Mr Abbott and Mr Shorten, respondents would have handed Mr Shorten a majority of 29 seats.

In terms of two party-preferred, it fell 53-47, Labor’s way and the Coalition’s primary vote would have plummeted to just 38 per cent.
