I watched a Louis Theroux interview with the Westboro Baptist church members and their illustrious leader and head simpleton.

Both extremely sad for the youth and children involved and an insight into the depths a religious belief can descend to.

What I found interesting is that they have almost the same mantra as the JW, though it is a many times more acerbic, prejudiced and fundamental than the JW version which is diluted in comparison. If you remove all the pith and fluids from the JW beliefs and then concentrate this essence further you get these guys. All the same, their beliefs are very similar. Well worth a watch if you can dig it up.

They are the only religious group going to heaven.
"God hates fags", seems to be their major rallying cry.
Christ and their form of Christianity is the only true religion.
They have the only accurate knowledge.
The world is about to end at any moment.
Satan is involved behind the senses in all human organised social systems.
Everyone but them is going to hell.
They are the only group who understand the Bible.
They are the group who are despised by everyone because of their love of God.
They are the faithful slave, etc, etc, etc.

Their background is Baptist as a kind of foundational belief only. The JW are foundationally Presbyterian, this being the religious form that Russell worked from.

Both these churches Baptist and Presbyterian back in the 1800s where preaching fire and brimstone, end of the world stuff and the end result are these American religions that are as backward as any Third World religion.

The Pilgrim Fathers have much to answer for.
