You seem to have a pretty good idea of what is going on micc.
Perhaps you could assist in explaining or confirming what is actually happening in a scenario that occurs every so often.
A mate and I both have the ANZ depth platform for observing the CDY market.
Sometimes just before or sometimes just after Market Open we see relatively large bids appear in positions 3/4/5.
There were bids of well over 100,000 suddenly appearing at the same time last week in these positions at 10.00 a.m. but would be gone about 2 or 3 minutes later leaving the original bids in place.

Would this be an attempt by a MM hoping to inflict FOMO (bids are building up)thereby precipitating a run on a share to which they can sell into much higher up or are they a bit more devious and doing it to sell their own MM shares sitting at 1 or 2 on the Ask side by spooking the market at open.
Or even more devious by placing more bids over the top of their own bids and then removing them and perhaps indicating to unobservant sellers (bids are disappearing) that the market is going down and they should sell quickly before it gets worse.

Pity that everyone is not required to stump up the cash in full before bids are placed.
It would eliminate a lot of this dismal and unnecessary action.
