Thanks for letting me know this kashga. I have had a total misunderstanding of the construction of the hole due to just picking up bits of info from here and there.
Essentially I had come to the conclusion that, lets start at the top. They drilled a 24" hole, inserted an 18-5/8"od. steel casing in and injected concrete between the casing and the hole. Likewise with the next stage, 17-1/2" hole with a 13-3/8" casing, concrete in the space between and so on.

This would create the stepped shape I have been envisaging.
But no!

I know you must be busy packing your case kashga.
I don't need to know why this is all so but when you return you might care to outline the principles for all this.
Alternatively, some other member with well construction knowledge might like to inform us.
