By assimilation, I don't mean they have to be just like "us".
We are constantly reminded we have to adjust to the world economic order or get left behind.
So there is plenty of room for different social structures, and many of us choose those alternatives.
We can choose to live in Nimbin or Balmain or where ever.
Whether we chose to live a simple life or a dynamic one is only ours to decide.
I do believe that we must be able to provide the where withall to give our offspring the basic education, social compatability and choice to make their own decisions.
Like most, I was always content to see my kids be academics, artists, spray painters or street sweepers, so long as they were happy with their lives.
What I did not want them to be was racists, bigots, or trying to take on some occupation to please me or societies expectations.
I guess I am getting away from assimilation somewhat, but just trying to define the difference between "all the same" and fitting into the world as it is now and not how it used to be, as utopic as that beckons.
