I still like the idea of the Russians in the 1950s who theoretically proved that if we could invent a machine to hold and bend space, thus allowing us to the the shorter route (kind of a short cut) and light will continue to travel in a straight line, we can beat the speed of light and be in the "future" before light arrives.
Light plays a big part in our understanding of "our world".
