The only record we have of the event states that he didn’t want to do it.

Which says it all. It is the only record. Nothing from Roman sources. Jesus was of no consequence to the Romans. The Pharisees were just a pain in the proverbial to Pilate, wanting Jesus killed for some ridiculous non-crime relating to their internal politics. It’s more than likely he went along with it in the end just to keep the peace. Christianity didn’t even exist then, so it could hardly have been a threat to Rome.

Obviously you don't believe that the texts of a would-be cult seeking to establish itself would be heavy on propaganda. Amazing that this never seems to occur to religionists: it is either 'divinely inspired', or at the very least an accurate record. Well the other alternative is that it is a poultice of lies.

Pilate's reluctance to execute Jesus in the gospels has been seen by Anchor Bible Dictionary and critical scholars as reflecting the authors' agenda.[29][30]
It has thus been argued that gospel accounts place the blame on the Jews, not on Rome, in line with the authors' alleged goal of making peace with the Roman Empire and vilifying the Jews.
