It is my understanding tax approved 'Trader' status use opening and closing FY stock valuation without the need to crystalise to offset tax.
If an 'investor' declared status sell to offset the 50% discount on CGT then immediately buy back the following FY which could be an interval of minimum 1 day ie. sell 30June then buy back 1st July, that would be blatant wash trade. If the same investor buy back withing a few months on the previous FY sell, they can then determined that they were protecting a good paper profit and buy back at a much cheaper price.
I think there are better methods to circumvent actual paper profit for this profit discounting if the stock is in the top 300 though.
