My last paragraph was meant to imply the shorts were making the same bet as the longs only the other side of the ledger as opposed to the conspiracy theories that abound on the hot copper stock forums.
A lot of retail punters think shorting is used primarily to facilitate low ball take overs or acquire cheap shares . Personally I think the incidence of this actually happening is negligible - Shorts are either having a bet that a company is overvalued or they are being used as a hedge against long positions - ( IMO )
