Mr Egan applauded Dr Nelson and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd for saying sorry, but said the issue of compensation should not be ruled out.

"Compensation is one of the many issues that should be considered,'' he said.

Barbara Cummings, a member of the stolen generation in the Northern Territory, agreed there was a need for financial compensation.

"I never thought this day would come,'' she told the ABC, adding that she had decided not to travel to Canberra.

"The word was just a word in my view and it didn't accompany the importance of compensation.
