If you go back to the announcement on 19th November 2007 Clarification of Issues Relating to Renewal of EL1348 Kodu" I believe the PNG government isn't p*sed off with Frontier but rather the Australian Government trying to bully them into making it a world heritage listed site (of which they have no right to enforce). Furthermore, prior to September 11, very few people had anything to do with the Kokoda track with 75 people walking the track in 2001 and this figure is now up over 5,000 people each year. IMO There seems to be more upside and economic benefit for the PNG government to renew their mining lease as the benefit to their economy is far greater than without the mining lease. Besides, from my understanding there are already several diversion from the original track that tourists walk and there are no significant graveyards or major battles that took place in the section of the track which would be affected.
