Nearly 2000 children have been separated from their parents or adult guardians who illegally crossed into the United States over a recent six-week period, officials said on Friday, as debate raged over how to end the deeply controversial practice.

The New York Daily News has slammed Donald Trump’s practice of separating migrant children from their parents with a front page featuring a harrowing image of a crying toddler.
The picture, taken by Getty photographer John Moore, shows a two-year-old girl crying as her mother, a Honduran asylum seeker, is detained at the US-Mexico border in McAllen, Texas.
The front page is headlined “Callous. Soulless. Craven. Trump”.
The subhead states: “Prez’s edict led to 2,000 children being ripped from border in just 6 weeks”.
In its scathing editorial, published on Saturday, the tabloid rips into the US President, accusing him of being a “lying coward”.
“The only thing worse than the nauseating cruelty of President Trump’s immigration policy — captured perfectly by the agonising stories of young children forcefully being separated from their parents at the border — is the craven dishonesty with which he attempts to sell it to the American people,” the editorial reads.
One Twitter user questioned what the world was going to do “about such inhumanity”.
“I can only imagine this child’s fear/trauma/distress/as she is separated from her parents,” @mitamuk wrote.
