If a chippie came around to my place and fixed my deck over the course of 2 hours and when I went to pay him he said, “a couple of cases of beer will cover it” did he get the beer for free?
Just because payment is made in non cash form doesn’t make it free.
You may also be surprised to learn that neither the ATO nor the IRS in the USA would consider those shares “free”.
