haakie, a Trading Halt can last up to 2 days. after that time the company must either resume trading or make a request to the ASX to go into suspension.
when big news, good or bad, is coming there is usually a group of insiders who can become aware of the news ahead of the market and buy or sell accordingly. So when a significant event occurs the company may choose to put itself into a trading halt until such time as it can assess the event in full and word an appropriate announcement to the market. After the whole market is informed the trading halt is lifted and everyone has a equal chance to react to the news. At least that's the theory.
