It means the employer was entitled to a payout of borrowed shares for nearly twice the market value.....
He was going to get the money in the bank next week........
Someone from the lab(a close friend)said cancel the payback because we have found the cure for cancer(nearly) and your shares now will be worth millions very soon....
So he asked the boss if he could cancel his payout...........The boss being good to his workers agreed but only if he kept quite about the cure(nearly)
