Your last paragraph volt is exactly what I am learning. Wait for your signals, then act swiftly and without bias. Set your stops and then manage the trade properly and with discipline. If it looks like it isn't going to reach your profit target, take what you have. If it decides to make a bee line towards your stop (for an unknown reason cos sometimes they need the room to move) then beat the action to your stop and exit swiftly. NEVER give your stop loss more room, and more it to break even when appropriate.

Sounds so simple but I think we all learnt it the hard way.
