re: how do i offset $45k cap gain? is anyone else At what point does the tax office consider you as a "share trader" as opposed to an "investor"? How active do you need to be?

My accountant wasn't terribly clear on the difference, although he did say it wasn't the monetary amounts so much as how active one was. At that stage I only had the grand total of 8 buys/sellls, all under 1 year, plus a number of long term holds with dividends. It is something I know I will be needing to discuss further because this year, the number has increased.

I do think Bigmack's advice is good because, although there are some helpful people here, you will get a lot of different opinions....
