"as bags that are issued by supermarkets often are discarded in the street"
I don't believe that for a second. The vast majority of bags are taken home carrying the food that was purchased. Personally all this bag ban means for me is that I now have to buy rubbish bags as I have always reused my shopping bags for rubbish. Grey shopping bags degrade quickly in comparison to the bags you buy as rubbish bags so I am sceptical of the benefit of this move. I really don't believe that shopping bags from supermarkets in Australia are of any real concern when it comes to ocean plastic problems .... I certainly think we need to do something to fix this issue but I don't think banning supermarket bags will do anything positive, indeed it could well be a net negative as Jim suggests.
