In most current lithium-ion batteries, graphite is used as an anode material. However,
silicon as an anode is able to store ten times more energy than that of graphite. From an internal perspective there has been a heavy emphasis on development work to demonstrate the use of AnteoCoat in lab-scale processes that allow for the creation of:

Silicon particle coatings, and

Silicon/carbon composites

So they have focused on silicon alone and also a silicon and carbon combination on the anode?

Polaris was commissioned to work on the evaluation of Anteo’s coated silicon particles and findings demonstrated that:

For a 10wt.% silicon anode, a better starting capacity was realized compared to a 10wt.% silicon anode without AnteoCoat.

A working 30wt.% silicon anode could be created by use of Anteo’s coated silicon particles. A functional 30wt.% silicon anode could not be produced by Polaris in the absence of AnteoCoat.

So they managed to achieve a working 30wt.% silicon anode?? Isn’t this a very good result?

The focus of the next round of work will be to apply learnings from these silicon particle coating experiments to further the development of the silicon/carbon composites opportunity. The Polaris commissioned work also showed Anteo’s silicon/carbon composite was able to produce a working battery using an anode with a silicon content of 24wt.% demonstrating a substantial improvement in electrode capacity compared to a conventional graphite anode. Whilst initial use of silicon’s capacity was in the expected range, cycle efficiency fell away faster than ideal. The focus of future work will be to optimise silicon composite structures and improve the cycling efficiency.

Now for the other part of their work they investigated the silicon and carbon combination anode. They managed to achieve a working battery with a 24wt% silicon content.

“Silicon (Si) has been considered as one of the most promising anode material for the next generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high energy densities, due to its high theoretical capacity, abundant availability and environmental friendliness. However, silicon materials with low intrinsic electric and ionic conductivity suffer from huge volume variation during lithiation/delithiation processes leading to the pulverization of Si and subsequently resulting in severe capacity fading of the electrodes. Coupling of Si with carbon (C) realizes a favorable combination of the two materials properties, such as high lithiation capacity of Si and excellent mechanical and conductive properties of C, making silicon/carbon composite (Si/C) ideal candidates for LIBs anodes.”

So you have graphene anodes, silicon anodes and silicon/carbon composite anodes.
I have noticed the part where it says “cycle efficiency fell away faster than ideal” has been heavily focused by a few posters. The way I understand this statement is that it is only affecting the silicon/carbon composite? It’s definitely not a good result, but surely it’s not the end of the road….

Now the part with CustomCells

In the other data stream, Anteo’s coated silicon particles were processed into anode electrodes and paired with commercial cathode electrodes by CustomCells. Tests were conducted with full pouch cells using a “Nokia” type cell format. These full cells were created successfully and normal cycling behaviour was demonstrated.

So now they are investigating full pouch cells? They managed to create these cells successfully and cycling behaviour was normal. Isn’t this a good thing?

I am not sure if I have interpreted this report correctly, but I feel it reads well and the results have been excellent? Or have I got this all wrong? Any feedback would be much appreciated as I do not come from a battery/electrical background. I am just trying to educate myself
