From what I understand, the coal basin runs east to west. Therefore the best quality coal is in the east. This is being mined by exxaro at Grootegeluk. The thickest seams then run through to Koert Louw zyn Pan and into Botswana. Apparently in Botswana the depth increases to the top of the coal and the best quality is only thermal. They have no coking coal on the Botswana side. The coal also is to be mined by u/g means.
The SA side is therfore better quality coal, shallower and open pitable.
