Toyota is planning long-range battery-powered electric cars for 2020 as its hydrogen fuel cells cars are failing

Link....... Fuel Cells Cars are Failing

If you do some very basic research you will see that Toyota were hot for fuel cells in 2014 and have in recent times began abandoning this technology in favour of battery power.

I think they have realised their mistake and are running hard to catch up else they get left behind.

Hydrogen Fuel Cells are just fine- they work, but as John Laws has said- "if you find something good then stick to it, but if you find something better then change to it" (Mortein to Johnson when he changed sponsorship)

also Betamax was better, but VHS won the day

It is all down to infrastructure once you have a 400 km plus electric car range. If I want to go to Melbourne from Brisbane - I need to know where I can reliably re-fuel along the way. Even if fuel cells are better I will still go for the easiest solution which is clearly not going to be hydrogen. If Toyota recognises their mistake then I wonder why lesser companies persist??

Plus I don't think I would be much good at refueling my hydrogen cells at home and where I have maybe a roof full of solar panels.

Hydrogen cells are a great idea (for some applications maybe?).... but face it, in automotive it is just bad luck fellas, you have missed the boat. No point in being a damn fool about it.
