A cure for type 1 diabetes may lie just around the corner say experts, after a successful transplant of insulin-producing cells in eight patients.
Scientists from Westmead Hospital transplanted insulin-producing islet cells from a donor's pancreas into patients' livers, where the new cells began to produce insulin, Fairfax newspapers have reported.
After just one treatment the amount of insulin the patients needed was drastically reduced, in some cases to zero.
Experts say the practice could soon become widespread, making injections unnecessary.
More than 140,000 Australians currently need to take daily insulin injections.
"This is an incredibly exciting step forward for both the type 1 diabetes community and for the world-class Australian researchers who are rapidly advancing in this area," said CEO of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of Australia, Mike Wilson
