So correct me if I'm wrong:
The 72mil represents shares that have effectively been borrowed for shorting but have not as yet been 'shorted.' Thus some 15+ borrower/shorters have borrowed x plus 72mil and shorted x! To calculate x you would need to somehow try and analyse the daily shorting positions - becomes complex.
What from recent announcements we do know however, is that Ausbil have added some 4.5mil to their holdings and I have never seen them listed as lenders to the shorters. (So less available for shorting!)
As an aside it interests me that Blackrock have been listed as lending shares to MS, yet they do not appear to have to report this as a variation to their earlier substantial shareholding notice?
