It's a long story but I'll try and give you the short version. No pun intended.
By the amount of thumbs you have there are others who don't understand the concept also'

The market (brokers) want to maximise trade at all levels, that's obvious, had the price not gapped there would've been a lot of trades in the gap to get the price to where it ended up, yes!

I take it you understand the process of selling short, that is you believe the market is going down so you borrow some of my shares at a hefty premium and sell them. You were right the market tanks, you buy them back at a ridiculously low price, give mine back to me and you keep the difference between what you sold them for and what you bought them back at

Great I'll become a shorter you say because everything I buy goes down, unfortunately that won't work because if you cant get it right by going long you'll do worse by going short'

Here's the thing then. If you were short on the Friday, at the open on Monday you were in serious trouble you now have to buy shares at more than what you sold them for to give mine back plus my premium, that's if you don't get a margin call and you are wiped out.

Because of the market dynamics which I won't go into here the price starts to come back and the shorter feels relief each tick it goes down because he can buy them cheaper and hopefully undo some if not all of the damage so there are a lot of buyers including longs who see a bargain, which all equate to trades.
