Eni unveils Evans Shoal plan

Issues of CO2 storage and Darwin LNG backfill still to be resolved

Eni has unveiled a plan to fast-track the development of the large Evans Shoal gas field off Northern Australia.
The Italian major is targeting first production in late 2022, with feedstock gas used to backfill the Darwin LNG plant and to supply the domestic market.
Ernie Delfos, managing director of Eni Australia, told delegates at the SEAAOC event in Darwin that a central processing platform and wellhead platform would be located in about 100 metres of water with a 350-kilometre subsea pipeline to Darwin.
The issue of carbon dioxide management is not yet finalised, but Delfos said three different storage scenarios are being examined – reinjection into the Evans Shoal field, reinjection into the Bayu Undan field, and reinjection into a reservoir in the Petrel sub-basin.
Delfos said all the necessary technologies for handling CO2 are already in place.
The Evans Shoal field has a CO2 content of 28%.
Another unresolved issue is the backfill into Darwin LNG given ConocoPhillips is already developing the Barossa field for the same purpose.
Eni acquired Shell's 32.5% operating interest in the field earlier this year, lifting its holding to 65%.
Eni's joint venture partners are Petronas with 25% and Osaka Gas 10%.
Evans Shoal was discovered in 1988 and has 10 trillion cubic feet of raw gas in place.
