Yes and as a result Buffet admits he wouldn't have invested in Microsoft in the early days. Because he personally, doesn't understand the tech sector.
Whereas he understands insurance. Or lending money viz AMEX.
He understands any company that produces material goods.
He doesn't understand intellectual property. He's an old guy and he sticks with what he knows. Yet he's mates with Bill Gates.
He's also openly stated that he doesn't know where the next wave of growth is coming from.
(Hint: in the ageing population, it's the health sector, biotechs...etc. But that involves IP.)
His investing model can be adapted to apply to techs or biotechs IF you understand IP and risk. The point is understanding the company and the risks, deeply. This is indispensible to any kind of investing. It means you can expect downside and when it comes, it doesn't faze you. Because you understand the company and what it has.
IMO.
