The oil deposits discovered off Dakar should produce their first marketable barrels from 2021. A manna on which the government counts to boost the country's economy.
Senegal is, for the moment, not a major producer of hydrocarbons. The only site in the country where gas is produced is in Gadiaga, near Dakar. The exploitation of this gas deposit discovered in 1997 began in 2002. But, with a capacity of 34,000 m³ per day, the production is well below the hydrocarbon needs of the country. As a result, a large part of the gas is imported, for a bill that accounts for 10% of the country's GDP.
But the page of Senegal's dependence on imported hydrocarbons should soon be turned. In a few years, Senegal could indeed be one of the largest oil producers in the world.
The oil reserves discovered during the last three years are estimated at 3 billion barrels, distributed over ten sites on the mainland and off-shore.
Already, several oil tankers are maneuvering off Senegal. Their mission is to set the stage and start extracting gas and oil. The first company should deliver its first barrels by 2021.

"Senegal will be self-sufficient and largely surplus from 2021-2022. We will become exporters, "says Mamadou Faye, general manager of Petrosen, the Senegalese public oil company.
With 120,000 barrels produced per day as of 2021, the oil spillover amounts to hundreds of billions of CFA francs for the country. The oil would then bring another $ 50 billion to Senegal's GDP.
