Jane,
Once you assign your shares to the broker, you lose ownership of them. If the broker go bust, you are an unsecured creditor. Bottom line is you can lose the lot. All risk and no gain. What a joke?
Problems you see recently are caused by unethical practices. Your broker appears to be unethical, I would be wary, very wary. You should check the business model of your broker.
