Bullitt will expand student drug testing

    All middle, high schools included

The Bullitt County Board of Education voted tonight to expand its random drug-testing program next year to include athletes and students in competitive extracurricular groups at all middle and high schools.

This year, the district only tested athletes at Bullitt Central and Bullitt East high schools. Those schools were chosen because a student survey last year indicated drug problems.

“We have had nothing but success” with this program, said Jaime Goldsmith, the district’s director of safe and drug-free schools.

Nobody protested the board’s decision. Many parents had said earlier that the testing was unfair and ineffective, and violated student privacy.

Under the expansion, athletes and students in competitive extracurricular activities who fail the tests must sit out 20 percent of the season and pass another drug test before returning. After a second failed test, they must miss the season and be evaluated throughout the year outside of school.

After a third failed test, the student is banned from competitive programs for the rest of his or her high school career.

Students could be tested throughout the year, no matter which season they participate in competitive programs.

“I think this is a good, positive move from the district,” said board member Gary Wooldridge.
