A few years ago a mid-ranking Chinese diplomat in Australia defected and claimed that the Chinese government had set up a substantial spy network here. The Australian government allowed him to stay here but no action was taken against the Chinese mission here. I guess that network is now very highly developed.

In addition there is a growing business interest with China here, and some locals feel that as they are "winners" from this connections they need to support China in other ways and have simply lost objectivity about China. The Australian press has long ago lost objectivity about China, and Labor is beholden to its past (the famous Whitlam vist to China pre-dating Prz Nixon).

One thing that surprised me from a recent drugs bust is that drugs are now being shipped direct from Chinese cities to Australia, rather than via Hong Kong or other Asian countries. I understand that the Chinese government is very strict about drug trafficking within China so I wonder how it was possible for the drugs to become available via China. Is there a possibiity that it is actually the Chinese government that is allowing the international drug trade (the Korean govenerment has been caught drug trafficking to western countries including to Australia)? The local (Australian) press initially menioned the source of the drugs but but subsequently avoided mentioning that they come from China.
