Hi Snacks,
A useful piece of advice from a trading book (I can't remember which one it was) stated to view the market not as a non-abstract entity that oils the machinery of industry, but as your own personal plaything that you use to extract money from.
Whilst my views are not quite that mercenary, I can understand that POV.
I fully understand when I have traded stocks like CNP and ABS for short term gains, there is someone left holding the bag or looking at their "investment
in a longer time frame.
I also have no problem in trading CVI - my view is that traders will move in the quickest at any sniff of things moving forwards with investors following them and buying the traders shares. It's two sides of the same coin.
My view is that it is all fair when looking at the trading screen - at least up to the point of legality (which is what we have discussed here a few times with CityView).
The real problem from where I'm sitting is not in traders - I have no problem personally or anyone else buying and selling stock - I've held stock for profit for as low as five minutes before. The real problem is people who try to manipulate others. Explaining why you are genuinely excited or interested in a stock or why you think it will go up in value is not manipulation; manipulation is where you try to target not logic or facts but emotion.
When someone tries to offload their stock by targeting greed - "this one will be $6 by Christmas" - it is playing with people's minds. More insidious however are those who play with people's minds who are already under stressful conditions (I don't think HC is the place for you if you are under stress, but I digress).
Targeting a stock like CVI to shake out stock at cheaper prices from those that are already stressed about it is pretty poor form. In that case no-one can hide behind the masquerade that it is an abstract market on their screen, when they are interacting with individuals to change the market to those individuals detriment.
I know the company has shot itself in the foot with the time frames but this does not explain the level of negativity that this stock engenders. And for all the Einsteins out there - yes it would have been great to sell in the 30's and buy now - give it a break!
Just watch out for Christmas in July!
