A: better positioned... I'd say it's variable. Many doctors have completed research before, during and/or after the degree.

A: that's a bit harsh. GPs have essentially become specialists these days. They have a college, an accredited traning program and must demonstrate CPD annually. I wouldnt criticise a GP until you have walked a few miles in their shoes.

Many medical doctors don't have a clue about the real nitty gritty of research, and nor should they because it's not really their job and they don't have the time to be scrutinising research.
A: that's rubbish. It is part of their job. Even doctors that haven't been directly involved in research have to be involved in Journal clubs on a regular basis, at least monthly, and scrutinise the quality of an article with other specialists. No time for scrutinising research... most doctors have a clinical:non clinical workload of 80:20, there is time for scrutinising research.

A: confused again... Physicians are specialists, not generalists. And I refer you to my previous comment above.

Attack the arguement, not the person.
A: ok. Overall, IMO, it seems your understanding of what doctors do, including their qualification to critique research is lacking. Nothing personal, but seriously disagreeing with just about everything you said.

FWIW, I’m a specialist physician in a large city hospital. I have a university appointment. I’ve contributed to international research in my field. I know research. I know publications. As for the criticism of general practice +/- doctors not being qualified to comment, that just shows a profound misunderstanding of medical training/research/CME.

I liked the Dr Nick Riviera post until it attacked mental illness. Average work by the poster.
