Hi @sell, MBR was introduced into China pre-2004. I referenced 2004 in my post as it was the earliest published revenue figures that I have found (see graph below from Frost and Sullivan Report 2011).

From my readings it appears as if first interest in MBR technology in China emerged in the early 90's with nationally funded lab-scale research projects, predominantly at Tsing Hua University (Beijing), Zheijang University (Hangzhou) and Tianjin University. Between 1995 and 1998 the first pilot MBR plants were developed (no info. on these as yet...). From 2000-2007 the first residential and industrial small-scale plants were built with treatment capacities < 100 m3/d; soon followed by medium-scale systems in the municipal and industrial sector with capacities up to 1,000 m3/d. The graphic below reveals the lead suppliers in Chinese MBR market up to 2007: a market that was dominated by Japanese, German and Singaporean suppliers.

In 2007 Japanese Asahi Kasai and Singaporean United Envirotech accounted for more than 50 percent of the MBR market share. Within four years, however, market shares changed significantly with Beijing Origin Water Technology Company (accounting for approximately 30 percent of the market). See graphic below.

In 2011 BOW had become the Chinese flagship MBR supplier with the largest installed capacity, most in the municipal sector, that was involved in many representative MBR pilot projects that rose to international attention, such as plants for Beijing Olympic Village in 2008 and the Grand National Theatre. At the beginning BOW had started as an engineering contractor using foreign MBR units, predominantly from Japanese Asahi Kasai, before providing completely integrated system solutions.

(As a case study of the risks of dealing with Chinese contractors the evolution of BOW certainly is a cautionary tale.)

@sell I'm only posting any information I find in the spirit of sharing and community. Please forgive any errors or omissions.
    Regards, n1
