    Trains are 1500t of coal each. Sometime ago there were around 19 - 23 trains a week to Lyttelton.
    The limiting weight factor is trying to get them through the tunnel at Arthurs Pass.
    Two engines I think pulling and one or two also pushing up the steep incline.
    Also on the other side I understand the weight may also be regulated by the stopping power of the brakes verses the kinetic energy of the ladened train. There is only one emergency brake application available, then the brakes are cooked. ie runaway train. The driver has to continually adjust downhill speed with engine dynamic braking so as to not have excess energy in case an emergency stop is required.
    This is why the trains are small compared to Australian coal trains.
