The demise of our car industry started with Keating and mr B , commodores were the same price here as mercs were overseas so down came the tariffs. Mitsubishi went under a SA state Labor party , Ford declared their leaving under a Fed Labor party govt, Holdens went under a Lib parliament ala Abbott...Basically every country props up its car industry . If I recall when I was in China , Bejiing has VW and Audi and Shanghai had BMW ( not sure) ... a bit like Adelaide with Holden and Geelong with Ford...and a bit like the rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne.IF all countries had a level playing field what country could compete against Asia...even amongst Asia itself...
