PC3 - agree there is plenty of room for several players, but there will be some that become more dominant and some less so. And some will not get the required critical mass and will be taken over or go out of business.

There were a few inaccuracies in that article. SKI is still just outside the top 10 - as at October. It is growing rapidly off as small base and should get into the top 10 eventually but maybe not until the Hungary plant starts producing.

Here is the current state of play:

    Ranking lower than Korean-based
[Today Energy Jin Kyung Nam] As of January ~ October 2018, Panasonic ranked first in battery shipments of EVs, PHEVs and HEVs, while Korean-affiliated LG Chem and Samsung SDI ranked fourth and sixth respectively Respectively. 2, 3 and 5 were recorded by CATL, BYD and AESC, respectively.

Worldwide shipments of electric vehicle batteries.
According to SNE Research, the total amount of batteries shipped to worldwide electric vehicles from January to October 2018 surged 80.8% year-on-year to 64.8 GWh.

LG Chem posted a 5.2GWh year-on-year growth rate (38.6%), which was much lower than the market average.

Samsung SDI posted a 2.3% increase in sales, up from 21.4% at 2.3GWh.
In contrast, Chinese companies such as CATL, BYD, Farasis, and Lishen recorded three-digit growth rates, contrasting with Korean-based companies that had lower growth rates than the market average.

LG Chem and Samsung SDI's shipment growth was driven by sales of battery-mounted models of each company. LG Chem's shipments increased mainly thanks to strong sales of Hyundai Kona EV, Jaguar I-Pace and Opel Ampere-e, and Samsung SDI's sales of Volkswagen e-Golf and BMW 530e.

On the other hand, total shipments in October increased by 96.3% from the previous year to 9.8 GWh. By company, Panasonic, BYD, Farasis, Lishen, Guoxuan and Chinese and Japanese continued to be strong, while LG Chem ranked 4th with one step down from the previous year.

Samsung SDI dropped in all four stages, with shipments remaining flat. Sales volume of the BMW i3 and Volkswagen Passat GTE among Samsung SDI battery models decreased, affecting shipments.

Chinese battery makers, on the other hand, continued to strengthen in October as the sales volume of Chinese electric cars continued to soar. Especially in October and January to October, Chinese accounted for more than half of the top 10. Panasonic, the Japanese company, is showing solid growth thanks to the surge in Tesla Model 3 sales.

According to SNE Research, a Korean company, LG Chem and Samsung SDI, have been steadily dropping their market shares due to their growing presence in both China and Japan. "We are confident that the two companies will be able to overcome the current difficulties, It seems to be an important issue. "
