Immigration has been a mess for years. Asylem seekers were handled poorly, put in concentration camps for years on end all at tax-payers expense. The department itself functions poorly and is uncaring and makes too many mistakes. Regards fuel prices I doubt much could be done to reduce them and their inflationary effect. What could be done is intoduce more fuel efficient hybrid and electric vehicles so that consumption is reduced and hence costs reduced lowering inflation. Also much improved public transport developed and more freight sent by rail. All these measures would greatly reduce oil dependance.
