I believe you should actually use " he/she/x" (the singular past/present pronouns) if you are going to use that sentence structure as "they" is a plural pronoun and as such the person identified could be misconstrued as "psychologically being of more than one mind" or other such Ill meaning associated with use of "they" with reference to a single entity.
You could have simply used the name in reference and that would avoid any inference or offense.
