The true average will be 170 x 8.37 plus 130 x 8.26, and the total divided by 300 (the total shares bought). I presume that would be how ComSec would do it but I have never checked it out. The method you have suggested is not an average. You have just added the prices together and divided by 2. For example an extreme case, if you but 999 shares at $2 and 1 share at $1 your method would give an average of $1.50 when, in fact, the true average is almost $2.
