Infantrymen in combat get paid. He is the Commander in Chief, powerful people want to kill him,
and he is not taking a penny.

If he means what he says, and succeeds, he will be justly considered with Lincoln as the greatest American President, sice Washington.
Personally I consider the difficulties faced by Lincoln and Trump to be greater and more complex than those faced by Washington.
