H @JustASideline, sorry for late post, just catching up on 14D following today's ann.

 Re "A great concept but it was just ringing a few alarm bells." Have those alarm bells been hushed by today's ann? If not, would appreciate it if you could elaborate on what they are.

A good find, I hadn't heard of them. I see they are aiming for a silicon-boron system able to operate at 2000'C, which sounds impressive, and may turn out to be. But their website says "The final goal of this project is to demonstrate the proof-of-concept of this idea and kick-starting an emerging research community around this new technological option."

They are funded by a consortium of institutes - you could compare the Amadeus project to a CSIRO project perhaps, though a multi-country consortium funded project is less likely to be as focussed as a CSIRO project. 

Certainly it appears that they are many years behind 14D whether well funded or not - with the technical and commercial viability being a long way from being established most likely.
 
14D started up in 2009 and are now close to running the first of 3 commercial pilot trials, which wouldn't happen without strong prospects of the technology being both technically and AND commercially viable.

Regardless, competition is good for improving awareness of viable alternative energy storage systems, and there is so much potential market size that there is room for any competitors to 14D I would think.
