A number of my peers have sighted this as common. There is and always will be a certain percentage who (from experiences) do not trust the financial system. You are wasting your time trying to put people off gold, particularly those coming to this site, as just to look means they are well on the way.

People who hoard banknotes are generally older people who are starting to come mentally unstuck. It's quite common actually, but very eccentric. Some hide them under the carpet, some sew them into the curtains and one of my brother-in-law's older relatives hid them in the curtain rods. It's bit like burying gold in the garden or hiding it in the stormwater drain - very eccentric.
