There's evidence for a chunk of comet hitting the North American ice sheet 12,800 years ago. The gradualist assumption doesn;'t hold. These things are always fast. It would be like saying the Indian Ocean tsunami was a gradual tidal wave where everybody easily walked out of the path of a wave of water. It's an assumption that's designed not to rock the boat of established archeology.
