A short position is when you borrow stock from someone and then sell it. You now have the money from the sale, but you're obliged to return the stock to the stock lender at some time in the future. In order to return stock, the shorter has to buy it on the market in the same way anyone buys stock on the market.
If the price falls, you buy it back with less money than the proceeds from the original sale and you make a profit. If the price rises, you buy it back with more money than the proceeds from the original sale and you make a loss.
