When i was going to primary school back in the late 1960's, I had a Female teacher smash me into the desk for not being able to understand long division. It completely shut me down emotionally as i was a child and the brain turns off. It's not that I didn't understand, it's just that the fear of suffering abuse stopped me totally from functioning and as a result the abuse got worse as my maths got worse.

I must add not all my teachers were not so harsh, I had some in later years in high school who were very descent and eventually I broke out of the fear and became very good at Maths.
