What most people fail to understand is that robotics is limited by computing power atm
computing power is limited by electronics -- electronics working makes heat (or puts off heat) - it's probably 'the' restricting factor.
Once we get rid of electronics - and go to something like 'spintronics' or whatever - the game changes 'massively'.
that's when you will find the robot in the kitchen doing the dishes - at a zillion miles an hour, before it wizzes to the laundry to get the clothes out of the washing machine into the dryer and the clothes out of the drier folded and put away - along the way it will brush the dog.
we know what we want - we just have to build it - so far - it's really slow - even though it seems fast.
Once we hit a couple of new technologies -- the pace at which we are developing atm will be left in the dust.
Also the big things that we just don't know about atm - are the things that we DON'T know that we want - but, someone will think of --
that someone will have Steve Jobs like qualities - someone who is a visionary - but, who, hopefully will be user orientated - in other words - someone who will build 'whatever' - that will fall into our hands and be 'intuitive' ------------ people like that are as rare as hen's teeth - but, every now and then they come along at the right time.
It's why something like an ipad can be picked up by someone who has never handled a computer or similar ever and within seconds to minutes be using the thing for something useful.
As far as not knowing that we need something - the smart phone is probably a reasonable example - before we had it - not many of us would have thought - gees, that would be really good - but now - most of us would die a quick death if we had to live without our phone - we never knew we needed one so much.
IMO - the next 20/50/100 years is going to be just plain amazing and, I think what we have now will look like the stone age

Exactly right. When I read the opening post I did so with a closed mind. Imagining a robot doing what I do, which is brick veneer properties on tight blocks. Not much goes smoothly, windows and doors are out of plumb, bricks can vary in size up to 10mm and panels between windows sometimes need cut bricks.. impossible for a robot to manage in that situation.
However, changing to complete block/brick houses would make it possible. I guess it will be inevitable one day..
Have you seen 3D printed buildings in China? Even their prefabricated buildings are impressive.. a major train station put together overnight.
