Yeah the timing to buy and sell can be difficult but when its done incrementally then you have more control.
If a share price is in an uptrend it can be bought but when it becomes technically overbought then it is prudent (most of the time) to take some money off the table to secure profits.
But the real trick in an uptrend is to remain exposed to higher prices incrementally less as it becomes more overbought.
When it turns lower as it always will you can either sell out or begin to accumulate depending on how you view the scenario.
Another scenario is to short the stock while you still hold it meaning that you are a long term holder thinking prices are going higher but lower in the short term.
You then short for the short term while continuing to hold for the longer term.
It also gives you a bit of protection if the reversal against you is bigger than anticipated and if the reversal doesn't add up to much then you can cover the short.
Sounds easy, but its anything but.
